Dabbing is a relatively new method of consuming marijuana that has gained popularity in states where it is legal to do so.
“Dabbing” refers to the practice of ingesting a “dab,” which is a concentrated form of cannabis (primarily butane hash oil). A dab rig isn’t something you’re thinking about if you’re just starting out with dabs, but trust me, you’ll soon be.
A dab rig, often called a concentrate rig, consists of a bong or water pipe. Bongs like this are made for inhaling water-vaporized concentrates. Common materials include glass for the body and either quartz or titanium for the nail.
Making your own dab rig is a great way to save money and have fun at the same time. Below, we’ll go through the fundamentals of dabbing and show you how to create your own dab rig or convert a bong for use with concentrates.
How To Make A Homemade Dab Rig
If your dab rig is broken or you just don’t have one, this Homemade version will do the trick. The first method uses a mason jar to build a dab ring. Mason jar dab rigs are the safest way to dab for long periods of time because glass does not conduct heat as effectively as the other materials on our list. Find or purchase a suitable glass jar with a lid as a starting step.
This is what you need.
- A medium sized Glass Jar with Lid.
- Drill to make holes in the lid.
- Pen without ink or tip.
- Straw (metal or bendy plastic).
- Aluminum foil.
- A Dab nail.
Gather those items and follow these steps.
- Drill a couple of tiny holes into the top of your mason jar’s lid. The hole needs to be big enough to hold a pen.
- Next, you’ll need to wrap the pen in aluminum foil and insert the foil-wrapped pen into a jar lid’s hole. The pen will serve as your downstem.
- Wrap some aluminum foil around the jar and nail your dab pen to it. Use a universal titanium nail for this procedure for the best results. Still, if you’re feeling resourceful, you can use aluminum foil to secure a quartz banger to the pen and jar instead.
- Put your straw in the other hole and seal it off with foil to keep the air in. The end of your straw mustn’t come into contact with the water contained within the jar; therefore, it may stick up a few inches.
- Dab as usual after filling your mason jar with water to about 1/2″ below the downstem. Use the straw to inhale it.
Convert Your Bong To Dab Rig
If you don’t have a proper dab rig to enjoy dabs, an old flower bong or water pipe is the most obvious way to enjoy dabs. Even though bongs weren’t designed to be used for dabbing, converting one into a rig is likely to be the least expensive and healthiest option. A bong can be converted into a dab rig by performing a few simple steps.

- Purchase an adaptor. To modify the bong’s gender and joint size, you’ll probably need a male-to-male adapter. If the joint of your bong is wider than your pinky, it is likely an 18-millimeter fitting; if it is the same width as your pinky, it is likely a 14-millimeter fitting.
- Pick your nail. Titanium nails are the most popular option because of their endurance and heat-conducting qualities, although there are other materials available. Always use a nail that is the same diameter as the joint on your bong.
- Make your bong with caution. Where dab rigs usually have downstems set at an angle of 90 degrees, bongs typically have a downstem situated at an angle of 45 degrees. This results in your nail sitting at an angle that makes it more likely for concentrates to come off when heated; therefore, you need to exercise caution when using a bong.
Pro Tip: if you have the correct adaptor and nail, you can use it as if it were two separate devices.
Methods For Dabbing Other Than A Rig:
If you’re not in the mood to be creative and don’t have the dollars for a new rig just yet, there are plenty of methods to smoke dabs without a rig.
Thankfully, concentrates can be added to bowls, pre-rolls, and blunts. They allow your flower to burn for a longer period of time and also provide you with the additional potency that comes from the hash. To tide you over until you can purchase a new rig, concentrates can also be easily vaporized in a compatible vape. When everything else fails, melt some butter and gently cook them in a saucepan, then use them in your favorite recipes.

Final Thoughts
If you don’t have a dab rig but still want to dab, you might already have most of the materials you need lying around the house. There’s nothing wrong with becoming creative when it comes to making your own pipes and other accessories, but you should be aware that there are health hazards associated with using homemade items regularly. In spite of the obvious dangers, there are upsides to smoking handmade pieces, such as financial savings, portability, and a unique sense of character. If you’re short on resources or want to try something new, handmade dab rigs are entertaining.
