Grow Your Own Marijuana Christmas Tree

Put your mind at ease this holiday season with a real live cannabis plant shaped like a Christmas tree. Contrary to popular belief, growing weed isn’t as hard as people make it out to be. Marijuana grows like any other houseplant. It needs certain environmental factors to completely thrive, but you can stick some seeds in some dirt and grow a small marijuana Christmas tree pretty easily.

The first thing you’ll do is get yourself some seeds. Some seeds grow faster than others, but, at the end of the day, if you start it early enough, it’ll reach a fine size to decorate by the time Christmas rolls around. You can germinate the seeds in a plastic baggy with a moist paper towel for a week to pop the seeds, or you can stick them directly into your high-quality potting soil. If you intend to smoke your flowers when you’re done, avoid things like Miracle Grow with synthetic fertilizers.

From there, you’ll place your plant in a sunny place or near a light source. Cannabis grows best by getting 12+ hours of direct light every day. You can accomplish this with LEDs or natural sunlight. You’ll want to keep your plants relatively warm since they’re tropical plants. If you live in a dry area, it helps to run a humidifier to keep RH around 50%.

After a few weeks, the plants will start to display their gender. Whether you have a male or female plant doesn’t really matter too much unless you plan to harvest it. However, we don’t really recommend it for marijuana Christmas trees. The act of decorating it and keeping it damages the THC anyway, so you’re growing this more for novelty purposes than for harvestable smoke.

As your plant reaches a good size you can start trimming it and tapering it into a Christmas tree shape. If your plant is female, it’ll start producing flowers. You should aim for one large top cola to make up the top of the tree and shape the branches into a cone structure similar to a douglas fir tree.

Once your plant reaches a good size, decorate it however you like. When Christmas is over, you can flush your plant and dry and cure your flowers if you’d like. Here’s our guide on how to do that.
