King Palm is riding the wave of a recent trend in the rolling paper market. More and more smokers are seeking out cleaner more natural papers. It seems as though there are a hundred different “natural papers” out there at the moment. The King Palm USP? The different components of the premade cones it sells are made from things like leaves and corn husks. We had heard and read a lot about this unique take on rolling paper but had yet to experience it ourselves. Finally, our curiosity got the better of us. Intrigued by the idea of smoking a different type of leaf for once, we knew we had to give King Palm rolls a try.
About King Palm Rolls
King palm rolls are made from the leaf of a plant you might not have heard of: the Cordia, a flowering plant that is a species of the borage family. There are many different types of Cordia, but the one that King Palm uses to make its rolls is native to southeast Asia. It’s here, on farms in far-flung places like Singapore and Malaysia that the King Palm roll’s life cycle begins. The leaves of the Cordia are harvested (in a sustainable manner), rolled, and then shipped off to California where they’re carefully packaged to ensure maximum freshness for at least 18 months. There’s no glue used in the making of King Palm rolls. In fact, these rolled leaf and corn husk filter cones are a completely sustainable, chemical-free, and biodegradable product. If you’re looking for (environmentally) greener ways to smoke, it doesn’t get much better than this. All in all, it would appear that King Palm is a company that cares immensely about its workers and the environment. But what about its product?
Different Types of King Palm Products
The company sells a number of different variations of its product. You can get king palm wraps in six different sizes: rollie, mini, slim, king, XL, and XXL. The sizes range from the equivalent of a small rolled joint up to a pretty sizable blunt. The XXL wrap is said to hold up to 5 grams of your herb of choice. As well as different sizes, king palm rolls also come in a large array of flavors. King Palm flavors, although creatively named, run the usual gamut of fruits usually found in flavored skins. The strawberry margarita, however, does sound particularly interesting. One thing we find cool is that their corn husk filters are available to buy separately, so if you’re more into rolling your own, you can still get in on that all-natural action. A decent selection to choose from, if not pretty standard for purveyors of rolling papers. The really original aspect of King Palm rolls is, of course, the fact that they’re made from leaves. The big question, of course, is what are they like to smoke?
Our Review
For the purposes of this review, we decided to keep it classic. We opted to steer clear of the flavored wraps and went for a King size cone. If you’ve read any reviews or product descriptions about King Palm Rolls, you’ll already have heard that one of their most distinctive features is their clean taste—or lack of taste, as the case may be. We can’t disagree. We have to say that the first thing we noticed when inhaling our King Palm blunt was the difference in taste from a normal blunt wrap. It’s very smooth to smoke, and definitely gives a different taste sensation than you would get with a standard blunt wrap. You could just about detect a slight earthy flavor from the King Palm wrap, but for the most part, there was no taste at all. This can be odd, at first. One great thing about these rolls, though, is that they allow you to taste all the differences and nuances in whatever strain it is you’re smoking. Another thing we noticed is that, as advertised, it burns at a nice slow pace. We would say at around the same rate as a standard blunt wrap when packed tight. On that note, each pack of rolls comes with a little King Palm branded bamboo pokey to help pack your herb in as tightly as you please. The corn husk filters are nice and tight, pleasant to smoke from with a decent pull. No complaint there either!
The Positives
There’s a lot of positive things to be said about King Palm rolls. They’re affordable. They’re smooth and slow to smoke. They’re chemical-free, fully compostable, and come from a sustainable source. There’s also a pretty good variety of sizes and flavors available. As well as this, because they come pre-rolled for you, they’re perfect if you’re not the best at rolling your own.
The Negatives
There aren’t a whole lot of negatives we can think of. We did find that they dried out fairly quickly when not resealed in their airtight packaging, so that’s something to watch out for. Also, if you prefer to roll your own, there’s no option to buy just the leaves, unwrapped (though as we mentioned, you can buy the filters separately).
The Final Word
For us, the positives definitely outweigh the negatives, and King Palm gets a resounding two thumbs up. We would say we were pleasantly surprised with the way King Palm rolls smoke and their taste. Their eco-friendly nature is a nice novelty, too.
